In a bid to foster connectivity and propel digital empowerment, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has unveiled a groundbreaking pilot project offering free WiFi services at 50 prominent locations across Lahore. This initiative, aimed at providing seamless internet access to the public, signifies a significant leap towards bridging the digital divide and fostering a more connected society.
Expressing her commitment to delivering on promises made, CM Maryam Nawaz expressed her satisfaction with the rollout of free WiFi at the designated spots, affirming, “We promise, we deliver.” This proactive approach underscores the government’s dedication to leveraging technology for the betterment of citizens’ lives.
The decision to launch the free WiFi pilot project was solidified during a high-level meeting between the Chief Minister and officials from the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB). With PITB spearheading the initiative, existing infrastructure, including hotspots, is being revamped to ensure seamless provision of internet services.
Under the directive of CM Maryam Nawaz, the PITB has been instructed to prioritize the deployment of free WiFi services in key locations such as educational institutions, airports, railway stations, and bus stands. This strategic approach aims to maximize the impact of the initiative, catering to the diverse needs of residents across various sectors.
It is anticipated that a total of 516 locations across Lahore will benefit from this initiative, significantly enhancing internet accessibility for residents. By extending internet connectivity to public spaces, the initiative not only facilitates communication and access to information but also promotes digital inclusion and economic development.
This initiative marks a revival of complimentary WiFi services initially launched by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government in 2013. Despite discontinuation by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government due to unpaid bills to internet providers, CM Maryam Nawaz’s administration has reinstated and revamped the initiative under the stewardship of PITB.
Previously managed by the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL), the oversight of WiFi services has now been transferred to the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB), ensuring efficient management and operation. This transition signifies a strategic move towards effective governance and optimal utilization of resources.
